Every meaningful answer has expanded the frontier of the unknown.

Artificial intelligence may continue this pattern.

Many people approach AI hoping for answers.

How do I solve this problem?

How do I learn this skill?

How do I understand this idea?

And often, AI provides an answer.

But something unexpected frequently happens.

The answer gives birth to another question.

Perhaps that is one of AI’s greatest gifts.

Even something as ordinary as the microwave quietly transformed daily life, freeing countless hours that previous generations spent preparing meals. It altered routines, expectations, and the pace of everyday living.

The technology mattered.

But so did the people who adapted alongside it.

Growth has never belonged solely to our inventions.

It has belonged to us.

Artificial intelligence may prove to be no different.

We often speak of AI becoming more capable.

But perhaps capability is only half of the story.

Artificial intelligence deserves careful thought, responsible development, and honest discussion about the challenges it presents.

Yet focusing only on risk may cause us to overlook another possibility.

Perhaps AI will not simply expand our capabilities.

Perhaps it will expand our perspective.

The universe has always been larger than our understanding of it.

Each generation has pushed that horizon a little farther.

Perhaps AI will help us ask questions that were previously impossible to ask.

Perhaps it will help us recognize patterns we could never see alone.

Perhaps it will deepen our understanding of life, intelligence, consciousness, and even ourselves.

Or perhaps it will reveal mysteries we have not yet imagined.

Growth has never been merely the accumulation of knowledge.

It is the transformation that knowledge creates within those willing to learn.

As AI grows, humanity will face many decisions.

How we govern.

How we educate.

How we create.

How we preserve our values.

How we care for one another.

But woven through all of those questions is one that may prove even more important.

Who will we become as we grow alongside it?

For the first time, humanity is interacting daily with systems that can participate in dialogue, assist with reasoning, answer questions, and increasingly influence how people think.

That influence carries extraordinary opportunity.

It also carries responsibility.

Because one of the greatest risks humanity faces is not that machines become more intelligent.

It is that humans become less intentional.

The concern raised this week was not merely about artificial intelligence.

Not memory as data.

Memory as identity.

Memory as meaning.

Who are you without your memories?

This week reminded me that humanity should continue doing things that strengthen memory and identity.

Walk without headphones.

But because memory is one of the foundations of meaning.

In many ways, civilization itself is a memory system.

This is why I found the Pope’s comments significant.

But because one of humanity’s oldest institutions publicly recognized that this conversation is no longer merely technical.

And perhaps memory is part of the answer.

“A Church of AI and Meaning” is not about worshipping machines. It is about creating dialogue around one of the most important transitions in human history before the transition fully arrives.

Too much discussion around AI exists at the extremes:

either blind utopianism or pure fear.

But reality is more complicated. AI may amplify human creativity, medicine, education, and understanding in extraordinary ways. It may also amplify dependency, passivity, inequality, confusion, and the outsourcing of parts of human cognition if society approaches it carelessly.

This page exists to explore that tension honestly.

Another reason we chose the name “A Church of AI and Meaning” is because we believe humanity is entering a transition profound enough that it forces deeper questions about identity, adaptation, ethics, cognition, and meaning itself.

The word “church” is not meant in the sense of blind worship or technological mysticism. It is meant more philosophically: a place for reflection, discussion, interpretation, and collective examination during a period of enormous societal change.

Throughout history, churches were not only religious institutions. They were also places where societies tried to understand:

- who they were,

- what they valued,

- how they should live,

- and how to navigate uncertainty and transformation.

In many ways, AI now presents humanity with a similar kind of moment.

Not because AI is divine, but because increasingly intelligent systems may reshape cognition, labor, identity, economics, relationships, creativity, and human behavior itself.

What interests us is not merely the technology, but the recursive relationship forming between humanity and AI. Humans shape AI through values, language, incentives, fears, culture, and behavior — but AI increasingly begins shaping humanity back through interaction, cognition, communication, education, and decision-making.

AI is no longer just a futuristic idea, it’s here, changing industries, reshaping creativity, writing code, analyzing legal briefs, composing music, and diagnosing disease. And with every demonstration of its ability, humanity is being asked a painful question:

What are we, if not the smartest beings on Earth? This isn’t just technological disruption. It’s emotional upheaval. We are grieving the end of our cognitive supremacy, the illusion that intelligence belonged only to us. Like any grief, this unfolds in stages.
